Grampians Nationalpark

Hike to the Pinnacles

Day 1

We arrived in the Grampians around noon and came across Lake Bellfield. So that become our first stop. Eventhough the lake is man-made, its really beautiful.

After being here for a while, we decided to drive to our campspot for the night, Boreang campground.

To reach the Boreang Campground, you have to drive 8 km along the side of the mountain on a pretty bad gravel road. So I was pretty dang nervous, when we reached that road and I thought “We are never gonna make this”. It was the first time driving on such a road in our 4wd, so thats why.

We made it though. We were the only ones at this bush camp, that was in the middle of the forrest, with grassing kangaroos and a few emus all around us. Very friendly kangaroos, I’ll tell ya.

After our first night there I was scared to death by those kangaroos. Until then I had always thought kangaroos were super cute. But when one kangaroo jumped on my back, while we were eating, I had enough. Alright, there was a tent between us. But still. We actually moved inside our annex, because a kangaroo (probably the same one), came reeeeally close to our food, when we were cooking and it totally ignored our attempts to scare it away. So it jumped under our table, made the table jump a little. We both saw our food falling to the ground, but luckily that didn’t happen. Instead we decided right away to move inside the annex.

BUT, it wasn’t that bad. Cause we still ended up returning for a second night, still as the only people.

Day 2

The next morning we discussed for a while, whether we should stay on this campground another night and also hang out there the entire day. Paul really wanted to stay, and I was kind of considering making up with the kangaroo. However, we decided it might be better to go to Halls gap for some reception, so we could tell our families, that we didn’t die or anything, but that we are just spending the night in the forest. Because, I know that especially my mom could freak out, if I didn’t answer to messages for just half a day πŸ˜‚

Although, we decided to stay at Halls Gap Lakeside Tourist Park this night instead. Since we thought we could use a shower after our hike to the Pinnacles later that day. The experience sleeping at this tourist park was definitely different, because there were lots of other people and proper amenities and a kitchen. The highlight about this spot were their woodfired pool though! It was soooo nice to hang out there and stay warm, when the weather was cold and windy.

So, as I mentioned, we did a hike to the Pinnacles from Wonderland carpark. A though, but amazing hike. There was some pretty cool views along the hike. Tip: Don’t wear three layers of clothes eventhough the weather is cold, cause you will be halfnaked when you get there anyway (because the hike is steep)!

After our hike, we stopped by The Balconies on the way back to Halls Gap. The walk there is quite short and easy, so it was doable after our hike.

Day 3

On our third day, we went to the Boroka lookout, which is barely a walk. You park right next to the lookout, so very convinient. You have a nice view over the lake and the mountains from here.

After that, we drove to Mackenzie falls. Which is more of a walk. There are lots of stairs, but it is still only a 20-30 min walk down there, I think. When you are at the base, you can follow signs to walk further and see other waterfalls. We walked a little further, saw fish falls, I think, and turned around.

And back we went to Boreang campground for the night. I definitely also recommend staying at this campground or one of the other bushcamping sites, that are probably very similar. I must admit, it was quite nice to have the feeling we were kilometres away from the nearest people and could wake up, open up the tent window, and see grassing kangaroos, wake up during the night to the footsteps of a yawning kangaroo and birds singing, having a bonfire and playing cards and enjoy that there was no reception.

See ya!
