Flinders Ranges Nationalpark

Wilpena Pound Campground

Flinders Ranges Nationalpark has a place in our hearts after we spent five nights. Just the views driving towards it, in it and out of it are breathtaking. As we drove out we both agreed that it was sad to leave. We felt like we could easily have spent more time there. There are plenty of hikes and walks to go on and plenty of room to relax, set back and do nothing. We spent a few days doing exactly that – nothing.

The first three nights we camped on Wilpena Pound Campground. On the picture above it looks like we are well into the forest with no other humans around and it did also feel a little like it sometimes (when a group of three families with 100 kids didn’t camp next to us). It was cool to have that feeling, having lots of space around you and not camping right next to others like in other campgrounds. And you also get toilets and showers. As far as I know there was no kitchen though. But we had a bonfire every night and cooked over this to safe some gas and that was really nice. Its actually the first time I have ever cooked a proper dinner over a fire, so it was fun. It took time, but it was worth it.

There are plenty of walks and hikes that you can go onto straight from the campground, so its just about making a pick. We picked Mount Ohlssen-Bagge after recommendation of a nice family. It took us around 3-3.5 hours return and it was a quite difficult hike. There was a nice 360 degree view over the park on the top and we could enjoy an undisturbed lunch up here.

After spending three night in Wilpena Pound, we decided to move to Trezona Campground for some bush camping. To get here you drive around 20 kilometers, if I am not wrong, on a good gravel road, which passes a few attractions, that you can stop by. We didn’t.

There were a few other cars at the campground, but again, parked very far from each other, so pretty private. At this campground there are only two compostable toilets and no showers.

From Trezona campground you can go on the Trezona Hike, which is an eight-kilometre walk through geological parts of the park. Is quite different from the Mount Ohlssen-Bagge Hike in the landscape and also a lot easier to walk. It was cool seeing how different the park is from place to place. This hike only took us a few hours.

I wish we would have gone on a few more walks and hikes, considering the fact that we had four full days there. But, Paul wanted to relax as well. So we had some nice relaxation time as well.

If you do have more time or if you’re just more active than us, we can also recommend going on the St Mary Peaks Hike. Other travellers recommended that one to us. Its around 14 kilometers long, but its apparently quite nice. And if you’re feeling like having a LONG hike, then we walked along some of the Heysen Trail, which is a long trail, that people spend days hiking on and camping along the way. We talked about how cool it would be to do, but unfortunately we don’t have any sleeping bags or camp mats, so we couldn’t sleep along the way in neither a tent or the basic huts that are provided.
